Why Stairs Are Different

Installing carpet on stairs is more involved than flat floor installation. Every tread (horizontal surface) and riser (vertical surface) needs to be measured individually because stairs are rarely perfectly uniform. Cutting and fitting carpet wrong on stairs leads to bunching, loose edges, or carpet that pulls away from the nose over time.

We measure each step, plan the carpet layout to minimize seams, and secure the carpet using the appropriate method for your staircase style. Properly installed stair carpet is both safer underfoot and much longer lasting.

Installation Methods

We use two main installation methods depending on your stairs and carpet choice:

  • Waterfall method — carpet is run continuously over the nose of each step and down the riser, giving a smooth continuous look.
  • Cap-and-band method (Hollywood style) — carpet is wrapped tightly around the nose of each step, showing the stair profile more clearly and using less material.
